Scratch BOT started working again. On its own and without any intervention on my part.

Because of that, we both came to the conclusion his internet service provider sent out a new set of DNS files (something every internet service provider does periodically) and the new DNS files took care of the problem.

Everything below this point is me documenting the issue and posting possible solutions in the event this happens again or to anyone else.

Snippet from an email I received on 12-07-2023:

--quote:
"Jeff ...I cannot get scratch bot to work. It just comes up as:Unable to load XML doc. Try again.

My internet is working and I can download the card.

I have rebooted, re-downloaded the card, re-loaded the DFM, all with the same result.

Any ideas?"

The reply I sent back:

"I've been using Scratch BOT for live play daily (including just a few minutes ago) and (naturally) it's been downloading the xml file at will at my end.

So what, at your end, could be preventing Scratch BOT from downloading the XML file from the Equibase site.

The attached text file contains a link to the page at the Equibase site where you can manually download the XML file. Fyi, I got the link by doing a Google search for the phrase "Equibase Scratches and Changes" (without the quotes.)

One of the attached screenshots shows the bottom of the Equibase Scratches and Changes page with the download xml file link circled in red.

What happens if you use a web browser to navigate to the Equibase Scratches and Changes page, and right click the link?

If you are able to do that:

-- You could (as a temp workaround) use the Scratch BOT Menu to open the downloaded XML file on your hard drive and parse it manually.

-- The ability to download the XML file using a web browser but not with Scratch BOT would strongly suggest some firewall or antivirus program (or even a Windows update) on your machine is preventing Scratch BOT from saving the XML file to your hard drive.

If you are not able to do that:

-- I would suspect either the latest DNS files from your internet service provider aren't referencing the Lexington, KY are where Equibase is located/

-- Or, some firewall or antivirus program (or even a Windows update) on your machine is blocking the Equibase site itself.

Let me know if you are able to download the XML file from the Equibase Scratches and Changes page with a web browser.

Within about 20 minutes after sending the above email I received a reply back saying Scratch BOT just started working again on its own.

Again, we both came to the conclusion the internet service provider sent out a new set of DNS files (something every internet service provider does periodically) and the new DNS files took care of the problem.
