I just made my first pass at UPR creation. Based upon Jeff's suggestions, I focused on doing ratings for specific distances across all tracks.

Everything worked pretty well (with some encouraging numbers) except for one specific thing.

All of my 8.3F dirt races are showing blanks for UPR. I checked the wizard and the entries are there, just like they are for the other distances, so I'm a bit confused.

Any ideas?

My first best guess would be the entries for min and max distance need some minor revision...

Race distance = 1 Mile and 70 yds
Race distance in yds = 1760 + 70
Race distance in yds = 1830

Race distance in furlongs = 1830 / 220
Race distance in furlongs = 8.3181818

Try the following entries for min and max distance:

Min Dist: 8.3
Max Dist: 8.32

Well that sounds logical. I just assumed that the program was rounding that stuff off based upon the data window.

I believe the other distances are working as intended, but should I be utilizing that same procedure on other distances as well?

Thanks!

Short answer: Yes. Always utilize the same procedure. It guarantees the set of entries you are about to persist WILL handle the intended race distance.

Long answer: For most of the other distances, it doesn't matter because the yards to furlongs conversion results in a distance in furlongs number that rounds cleanly.

Example where it doesn't matter 6f:

Race distance (yards) = 1320
Race distance (furlongs) = 1320 / 220
Race distance (furlongs) = 6.0
You can safely use:
UPR Min Dist: 6.0
UPR Max Dist: 6.0

Example where it does matter 1M 40 yds:

Race distance (yards) = 1800
Race distance (furlongs) = 1800 / 220
Race distance (furlongs) = 8.18181818...
You can safely use:
UPR Min Dist: 8.18
UPR Max Dist: 8.20
