JCapper on Tablet |
Ishmael 2/22/2011 11:45:02 AM | Anyone running JCapper on a tablet? For those more tech savy then me (ie everyone) what potential issues/challenges do you see?
|
GlennF 2/22/2011 6:53:19 PM | I have used a program called "logmein" on my ipad to show and manipulate the screen of my imac (running jacpper on windows) through an internet connection( 3G or WiFi) Having to go through the internet slows things down a bit but it does work. There are other similar programs but if my memory serves me correctly the price was right for this one (free or at least very inexpensive). I think there are versions for both Mac and PCs
update: the ipad version costs $30

JustRalph 2/24/2011 4:22:34 AM | There are some windows tablets out there, most notably the HP version. At 800 bucks plus.....it is dead on arrival.
I would love to be able to run Jcapper on a tablet but I am not confident in any Windows tablet being worth the money or being nimble enough to compete against the IOS or Honeycomb tabs.
Microsoft got their asses handed to them in this realm. And they deserve it. In a week Ipad 2 will be displayed for all the world to see. The invitations went out tonight.
I look forward to the dual core Honeycomb tablets........it should be very interesting in the next 90 days or so
Jeff?

tanix 9/20/2011 8:39:24 PM | OK, I'm running the LogMeIn app on my iPad to access my home PC running JCapper. It works OK, although the JCapper interface is most definitely not optimized for touch screen operations.
I also have a batch file in my start menu that copies Report_*.* to the DropBox directory on my PC. That directory is synched with my iPad, so I then open DropBox on my iPad and view the HTML report on that device.
It isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it is functional.

jeff 9/20/2011 9:02:21 PM | JCapper is written in VB6. I'm using Windows dlls for things like combo boxes, list boxes, command buttons, file dialog boxes, drive and folder nav tools, embedded IE web browsers, the Windows file system, etc. Without a Windows environment - or given a Windows environment where those dlls aren't registered: JCapper can't run.
I know... VB6 has now become an obsolete programming language. Trouble is, the JCapper code base is so involved... There are literally thousands of calculations per horse during number crunching - It might realistically take me the better part of a decade if I ever decided to rewrite it to make it web based - or make it compatible with a different operating system, etc.
That said, I know at least a few of you who are running JCapper on a Mac. And from what I've seen it runs faster on a Mac than it does on a PC.
Well, that's only possible because of Windows Emulators... like WINE.
If I knew of a reliable Windows Emulator that was iPad compatible, I just might take the plunge... and see what shakes out from there.

tanix 9/20/2011 9:42:00 PM | Jeff, I can't see there being an emulator for iPad that was robust enough to accomplish that, but then again lots of things happen in technology that I couldn't see happening at some point, so who knows? :-)
On the other hand, if you ever want to take a stab at creating an alternate user interface that will be easier to use in a touch-screen environment, that might well make it easier for those of us utilizing LogMeIn (or VNC or whatever) AND it would have the side benefit of making JCapper better for the time when Windows 8 ships and hybrid tablet/netbooks start to proliferate. If you ever decide to take that step, let me know and I'll be glad to participate and/or beta test. :-)

GlennF 9/26/2011 4:13:13 AM | I'm glad to hear that there are others using Macs to run Jcapper
For those people by using Parallels7 to run windows on your Mac and Parallels Mobile on an iPad you get a very touch friendly interface to run Jcapper from your iPad. Much better than logmein.

Ishmael 11/23/2011 8:40:23 PM | One more question. Anyone have any experience using LogMeIn?
Am thinking this could be answer am looking for
|
jeff 11/23/2011 10:05:49 PM | I've had some experience using Join.me to link two machines together in a tech support role (all of it good.) But that was PC to PC - not mobile device to pc.

tanix 11/27/2011 5:26:43 PM | Ishmael, I use both the iPad version and the browser-based version of LogMeIn pretty regularly. It is dependable enough that I've switched from running two copies of JCapper (one on my home machine and one on my laptop) to just running a single copy and using that remotely when I'm on the road (or even at the track.)
It isn't perfect, but it isn't bad.
