1) Building database 2)SQL |
Maltzaroo 8/12/2010 12:01:40 AM | 1)I've just updated to the latest version. I created 3 files - June 2010, July 2010, and August 2010, using Mode 4 - Build from Scratch. June and August appear normal. Last night I downloaded data and results from all tracks for the first 10 days of July into the July folder. Exception Report checked out OK. Question is: When I use the data window with July 2010 selected and tell it to open a playlist file, it shows not only "Archived RaceFiles" and "pL_profile", but "PLN0701F, PLN0702F, PLN0703F etc. through PLN0710F." Why does Pleasanton show up like this? It doesn't seem to affect how the data window functions. Do I not worry about it? 2) I'm using Mode 4 to build and Mode 5 to append. Would this be correct, if I don't even know what SQL Mode is? I can't seem to find a description of what SQL is. Can I live without it for now? It looks complicated or at least it looks like something I could learn later.

Since Pleasanton files also begin with PL, they are also displayed.
I would just ignore the Pleasanton files and run only the pL_profile file, which is also the one that is selected for you by default.

When I wrote the earliest version of what would later evolve into the Data Window (late 1980's) I created a simple user interface that enabled the user (I was the only user at the time) to select a sequential text file so that it could be queried.
All of those early sequential text files were based on individual "profiles." A profile could be defined as using a collection of rules to select horses. A profile was my earliest incarnation of what would later evolve into a UDM.
The key difference between a profile and a UDM? With profiles, sometimes human judgement was called for in bending the rules a little. For example, the rules might call for the selection having the top last race speed fig. But if two horses were within 1 point of each other at different distances and both had long enough odds on the tote board, I'd consider both of them to be the top horse. With a UDM, that never happens. A horse either fits the rules (all of them) for a UDM Definition or it doesn't.
What does any of this have to do with files for PLN showing up in the Data Window?
That earliest version of what would later evolve into the Data Window was programmed to scan a 31/4 inch floppy drive and display all of the sequential (comma delimited) database files. As it so happens, all of my early sequential database files began with the characters "PL" followed by the file extension ".txt" --
The file name "PL_Profile.txt" still bears the namesake of the earliest precursor of the UDM... a profile. Back then, each pl_profile.txt contained results data for all horses fitting or qualifying (with a little human judgement thrown in) under the rules of an individual profile.
To this day, the Data Window is still programmed to do the same thing: Display all files on the target folder that begin with the characters "PL" followed by a file extension of ".txt"
And of course 22+ years after that part of the Data Window was written, along comes HDW delivering charts text files with file names like "PLN0807f.txt" -- which naturally show up in the Data Window's file dialog box.
Now you know the story of why those files are there. Feel free to ignore them.
As for SQL Mode, when you are ready to make the jump, the jumping off point is to goto the JCapper 101 Audio Video page at JCapper.com and click the Index item labeled "Operating JCapper in SQL Mode."
There you'll find links to design docs, videos, and sql tutorials that should enable you to get started.

| Maltzaroo 8/12/2010 12:47:38 AM | Thanks ArlJim and thanks Jeff for the explanation. Do you think Data Build Modes 4 and 5 are the correct ones for me right now?
| jeff 8/12/2010 12:56:43 AM | 3, 4, and 5 will certainly work - although until you make the jump to sql mode, there really isn't a reason to populate the starterhistory table. No harm in populating it though.
Sounds like you are on the right track.
