By going to try and build a database

Ok, I am going to try and get a database built for a few tracks and was about to purchase some xrd files for Hollywood and Arlington when I realized maybe I should inquire with the experts here on what is the best way to compile what I need.

I assume I will need the cards and xrd files for whatever track I want. I only want to go back a year, meet to meet really for these two tracks for now.

Any suggestions? I was about to purchase the xrd files from the archive server at Bris.........not sure about where to get all the cards though.........I have many for hollywood, but not arlington. I assume I can get them from Bris also.

Any tips....... greatly appreciated.

You can pick and choose whatever dates you want of the xrd and drf files at the archive server. I rarely look at old data, the last few weeks seem most pertinent to me. I find it difficult to find consistencies from meet to meet.

Ralph,

First rule about Fight Club -
Never talk about Fight Club...

Seriously though -

First rule about building databases -
Never mix files from different years on the same folder.

The file name does not contain the year - meaning that APX0601.DRF and APX0601.XRD for 2007 have exactly the same file names as APX0601.DRF and APX0601.XRD for 2008.

Rule #1 - You want to be sure your folder structure prevents files from different years ending up on the same folder.

If you want to build a 2007 database, then use the folder named 2007 and simply copy any and all 2007 .DRF and .XRD files that you happen to have to that folder. Strong hint: If you copy the zipped up versions of those files then make sure you unzip/extract them onto your 2007 folder.

To Build a Database from scratch:

1. On the System Definitions Screen make sure the Append to Database During DB Build Checkbox is NOT checked.

2. From the Main Module, click the button labeled Build Database.

3. Use the Nav Tools behind the DB Builder's Folder Icon to point the DB Builder at your c:\2007 folder.

4. Select your File Type (example: Bris .DRF Single) from the DB Builder's File Type drop down.

5. Click the DB Builder's "GO" button.

The DB Builder will match up the .DRF and .XRD files on the target folder by track and date. As it does this it will create an exception report showing all .DRF files and .XRD files that you are missing based on the files that you have. You can view the exception report at the end of the Database Build or you can navigate to the target folder and view the report file itself (file name: Missing_TodaysDate.txt) by simply double clicking it to pop it open in Notepad.

Even if - especially IF - you have zero matching .DRF and .XRD files I recommend you perform the Database Build From Scratch... simply so that you can see the exception report which lists out those files you need.

I've found that the Bris Archive Server is a clumsy time consuming way to obtain missing files. I dislike using it.

A better way, IMHO, is to arm yourself with a list of the files you need - pick up the phone and call up Bris Tech Support and ask someone to burn the files you need onto a CD and mail it out to you. I've found them to be very helpful in that regard.

I have found that the xrd results files from TSN and BRIS are interchangeable.

This saved me a few bucks when I bought my BRIS files for the NYRA and Southern California circuits.

Used the archive server without a hitch.

now on to figure out how the hell to work in the data window.

Jeff, are the mp3 audio files still out there somewhere?

Yes. Visit http://www.JCapper.com and click the link on the left side of the page labeled Help Documents. All of the Help Docs and last year's Podcasts are available from there.

It's easy - Using either the Card Loader or Screen 2 of the File Downloader, change the File Type to JCapper.DAT file, then pick a .DAT file, load it, and run a Calc Races.

Just be sure to change the file type back to your normal data file type next time you are ready to load a card or two for live play.
