Interested in building sql mode for different year folders (2009 and 2010). What database modes do you use for different years? I watched the database modes video and read the help documents. I understand the monthly folder structure. How does that apply to different years?

Also once you do the first year can you append the next year to the previous year (playlist and starter table).Would that overwrite 2009 data with the 2010 data?

Here are a few thoughts on populating a StarterHistory Table with data from different years... Do it the same way you would for different folders.

There is nothing special about a year - other than the fact that names of data files do not contain a year element as part of the file name. For that reason, avoid storing files from different years in the same folder.

Other than that, just keep adding folders, one folder at a time, until your table contains data from every folder that you want.

Populating the table via Build Database routines and Build Modes
If you are populating the table via Build Database routines:

1. For the very first folder processed - Build using Mode 3.

2. For all subsequent folders:

a. If a subsequent folder is complete (meaning that you are well past the end of its time period and it contains a complete set of data and results files and that you are no longer adding data and results files to it) - Build using Mode 4.

b. If a subsequent folder is not yet complete (meaning that you are right in the middle of the time period the folder is intended to span and you plan on adding files to it after today's build has been performed) - Build using Mode 5.

Compact and Repair
Run a Compact and Repair after each build.

File Size Considerations
Microsoft .mdb files have a 2.0 gigabyte upper limit for file size. Look at the file size after each db build/compact and repair.

General rule of thumb:

Most users can fit 2 full years of data into a JCapper2.mdb file... as in data and results for all tracks everywhere.

However, this depends on the factors included in the user's factor setup. String data (names) take up more space than numeric data. A user who uses the factor set up wizard to remove names of rider, trainer, sire, dam, etc. and replace them with numeric factors might be able to fit as much as 4 complete years of data into a single JCapper2.mdb file.

Multiple JCapper2.mdb Files
Once a JCapper2.mdb file nears (about 2 yrs) capacity - add a second file:

1. Copy the file and use it to start over... Right click the c:\JCapper\Exe\JCapper2.mdb file and select COPY. Then right click in your folder and select PASTE. Windows will put a copy of the file on your c:\JCapper\exe folder.

2. Rename the copied file to preserve it... Right click the copied file and select RENAME. Rename the file to something that helps you identify the time period for the data it contains... Use something like JCapper2_2009.mdb if the file holds data from 2009.

At this point you have two files - one containing data from 2009 - and one (with your factor setup completely intact because of the way you created it) named JCapper2.mdb that you can use to contain data from the next series of folder you want to add. At this point go back to the top of the sequence listed above - and do the first build in Mode 3.

HINT: The Data Window has a MENU function that makes it easy to switch back and forth between multiple JCapper2.mdb files.

Populating the StarterHistory Table via Data Window Export
Alternately, a starterhistory table can be populated using the MENU Data Window Export function.

This is useful when the folder was perviously built and you have no reason to rebuild it.

In the Data Window, click MENU, click Exports, and select one of the two StarterHistory Table Export functions:

1. StarterHistory Table Export CLEAR FIRST
Use this function for the very first folder you want to add to the table. As the name implies, the table will be cleared before exported data is written to the table.

2. StarterHistory Table Export APPEND
Use this function for all subsequent folders you want to add to the table. As the name implies, existing data in the table will be left alone and data from the export will be appended to the table.

Be sure to run a compact and repair after each StarterHistory Table Export.

File size considerations posted about above still apply.
