So....from an earlier post " an "e" line is ALWAYS by definition a big failure." Given that fact, I don't understand the meaning behind e' and e! type horses as both characters correspond to winning with the particular running style. Can anyone shed some light??? Thanks in advance Scott.

Scott, I sent the question off to Ron Tiller at HDW.

Here is Ron's explanation:

--quote:

Only maidens should have running style designations of e' or e!. Because maidens have not won yet, their running styles cannot be based on their last 3 wins, so their running styles are based on their best finish. Here's an example:

A horse runs 1st race lifetime as an SS, finishing 7th.

Going into his 2nd race, he is designated as an SS' (best finish = 7th = only race = SS). In his 2nd race he runs as a e but finishes 6th.

Going into his 3rd race, his best race is his one 6th place finish, so the horse becomes an e' (best finish = 6th = 2nd race = e). In his 3rd race, he also runs as an e and finishes 6th again.

Going into his 4th race, his best finish is still 6th place, but he has finished 6th twice, both as an e, so his designation going into the 4th race will be e! (best finish = 6th twice = e!)

And the horse still has not won a single race.

You can post this on your board if you want.
