Best Downloading Method! |
Maxspa 4/1/2010 10:33:54 AM | All, I am downloading files for 7 tracks! I have March Data + Xrd files for all seven tracks but it has been a "BEAR". I have downloaded files carefully but have ended up with one or two files missing, necessitating going back and downloading the files again. The checking for files on the target folder and transferring the files to my March folders adds to the time spent. Thanks in advance for some help on this subject! Maxspa

I have to ask: Why 7 tracks?
Why not just get them all?
Consider using the "Synch To Disc" button on JCapper's HDW File Download Tool.
1. In the HDW File Mgr, click File Download Tool.
2. On the Download Tool, click Login.
3. Click one of the Que Files buttons... Que Both causes the file listbox to auto populate with a list of all files available for download from the HDW site.
4. If your target folder is something other than your default data folder, use the Folder Icon/Folder Nav Tools to point the module at a target folder. 5. Click the "Synch To Disc Button." The download tool will "peek" at your target folder, prepare a list of all HDW files sitting on the target folder... and compare that list against the list of file names sitting in the Download Tool's File List Box. The interface will then auto-select/auto highlight ALL of the files in the listbox that you don't already have sitting on your target folder.
From there it's easy...
6. Click the Download Button to make the Download Tool download all of the highlighted files to your target folder.
Fast, easy, effective...
Best of all you don't need to micro manage missing files. Synch to Disc does all the work.
If a build database exception report shows a missing results file, check the HDW site. Chances are that the race card in question will turn out to be a cancellation. In that case, just delete the data file and you're golden.
One other tip worth mentioning... Decide in advance on a folder structure that works for you. I'm using a year/month folder structure. I have a c:\2010 folder... and underneath that 12 separate folders for each month...
c:\2010\Jan c:\2010\Feb c:\2010\Mar c:\2010\Apr
Right before the start of each new month a new monthly folder gets created for the coming month.
March charts and data files get downloaded to c:\2010\Mar...
April charts and data files get downloaded to c:\2010\Apr...
I hope I managed to explain that in a way that makes sense.

Maxspa 4/1/2010 11:34:29 PM | Jeff+ Ryesteve, Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my downloading dilemma. What really confused me was one download period might have one or two files particularly Xrd files that were not on my target folder when I finished the process. A couple of them were because racing was cancelled but others were lost somewhere in the process. If I really believed that minor tracks had quality racing then I would download some of them. The Michael Gill situation makes me wary of what goes on with trainers and jockeys other than, they appear to run the show. So that is the reason that I try to stick to the Major venues not that problems don't exist there! However, being positive, perhaps the problems at the Major Tracks aren't as blatant. Finally, I understand that it is easier to download all the tracks than just a few. I get frustrated when I download the data files+xrd's and sometimes they don't appear on my target folder. Jeff, I will take your suggestions seriously and again I thank you for providing the support to get me by this bump in the road! Maxspa

I completely understand and respect decisions about limiting tracks/circuits followed to those meeting individual player standards.
That said, would having a button on the module labeled something like "Que My Tracks" be something you'd find useful?
My thinking here is that a player wishing to follow certain tracks throughout the year would have a simple interface where a list of track codes could be persisted...
For example, if you just wanted to follow the majors, your track list might look like this:
AQU-BEL-SAR-GPX-CDX-KEE-DMR-SAX-OSA-HOL
When you hit the "Que My Tracks" button, the module would pull up your track list and use it to populate the files available for download list box with files having a track code match limited to those on your track list.
Combined with the "Synch To Disc" button - this would provide an easy way to stay on top of file management for the player restricting his play (and interest) to just those tracks meeting his or her standards.

If you add TAM and CNL to what you stated above, you will have my year round list. lol
In all seriousness, the Que My Tracks sounds like a great feature regardless of data used.

Maxspa 4/2/2010 8:53:25 PM | Jeff, The downloading suggestion you made has merit. However, in order to make this valuable, it would have to be beneficial for other members of the JCapper group as well. Another reason for my thinking is you have such a major responsibility with the new files plus trying to add improvements to the software your role can be taxing to say the least. Enjoy your Keenland Trip!! Maxspa
