When did weight shift make it into the dynamic filters wizard? And how do you use it when you drop or add weight? Is it the same way as beaten lengths. Interested in flagging apprentice jockeys and finding horses gaining weight(class of race).

Weight Shift has been handled via dynamic filters since the beginning. Weight shift is weight carried today subtracted from weight carried last time out. Nothing else and nothing more and very different from weight allowance for an apprentice. Still, weight shift provides some interesting insights and is something I just about always add to my Business UDMs. If you want to create a UDM that flags apprentice riders, the best way is to create a rider list containing only the names of apprentice riders and paste that into a UDM Def. Then periodically update that from time to time.

To create filter codes for weight shift and add them to a UDM, in the UDM Wizard Modify Screen:

1. Select Filters as your factor.

2. Click the Dynamic Filters button.

3. In the Dynamic Filter Tool, select Weight Shift as your Factor

4. Select ALL classes and ages as your Context (or whatever class or age group you want to apply the filter to.)

5. Select the behavior that descibes your min cutoff.
Example: If you want -5 lbs as your min then select either MIN or NEG as your behavior. If your min val is a positive number then always select MIN as your behavior.

6. Select Prompt for Value as the numeric value for your cutoff. Then key in the number you want to use for your min value when prompted. Example: You want -5 lbs as your min cutoff so simply key in a minus 5.

The filter code in the little preview window now reads >ALL>NEG5

What this means:

* the bracketing characters > and > define weight shift as your factor

* the characters ALL defines all classes and ages as your context

NEG5 means -5 lbs is the min cutoff

7. If that's the filter code you want to use then click the ADD FILTER button to add the filter code to the big preview window -

8. Repeat the above steps to add more filter codes to the big preview window.

9. Click SAVE AND CLOSE to close the filter tool and write all of the filter codes in the big preview window to the UDM Definition.

10. Run the UDM through the Data Window broken out by the factor you were trying to control. Always check your work.
