Question about new Data Folder Manager. |
Jim the Tolerable 7/9/2009 11:10:17 AM | When using the three data file idea, how does that affect the database build? Would one build databases three times, or only use the three folders for live play and still use an overall target folder for downloads and databases? I guess I am not quite getting the work flow of the three folder idea. Thanks, Jim

Think in terms of DAILY folders for daily reports vs. TARGET database build folders for building and querying databases.
When you build a database you point the Database Builder at a target folder (where YOU have chosen to store data and results files) and hit the "go" button. The target folder has BOTH data AND results files on it. The Database Builder matches them up by track and date and does its thing... with the end result being a database that you can use for R&D.
The idea behind The Data Folder Manager - at least the way that I used it in the video - is to give you up to two additional folders to use for CALC RACES routines... the idea being to allow you to break up a large number of data files that you downloaded for a single day into separate "chunks"... with each "chunk" of files being copied to a folder containing like data files according to time zone of post time for R1... making management of scratches and changes and Calc Races routines go smoother because you are managing individual groups of loaded card files instead of trying to keep on top of scratches and changes at 18 tracks at once.
The way I work this is:
1. Download data files for the day - saving all files to the folder that I intend to use as the target folder used during a Build Database.
2. Download results files from the previous day - saving them to the same folder as my data files.
3. Use the File Unzipper to unzip data and results files downloaded in steps 1 and 2 above - extracting them onto the same folder I intend to use for a database build.
At this point file management for TARGET database build folder(s) is handled.
Everything that appears below is intended for file management on DAILY file folders.
4. Use Windows Explorer exactly in the same way I did in the video... I use the built in search function to find and display all the individual data files bearing today's date... simply key *todaysDate.DRF or *todaysDate.PCS as my search string into the search box and Bill Gates will find all of today's data files for you. Example, today is 07-09-2009. * is the wildcard character which designates any and all text characters up to that point in the string of characters to be searched for. A typical BRIS filename might be BEL0709.DRF. By typing *0709.DRF as a search string into the Search box, Windows Explorer narrows the display of file names in Windows Explorer down to file names that match my search string... and I'll see something like the following in Windows Explorer:
APX0709.DRF BEL0709.DRF CRC0709.DRF CTX0709.DRF EVD0709.DRF HOL0709.DRF ... etc,
5. From here I can ctrl-click individual files to select them, right click the selected/highlighted group, and select COPY (not cut) to copy all the files from that highlighted group onto the Windows Clipboard. Note that the files selected all have like start times for R1.
6. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to one of your daily folders and Paste the files sitting on the Clipboard into that folder.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 - copying files onto your other DAILY folders.
8. From here you can easily manage each of the daily file folders... load card files, get scratches, run a Calc Races, view Reports, etc.
And the Data Folder Manager makes it easy to toggle back and forth between daily folders.
Notice that I'm NOT recommending you copy results files to your DAILY folders. At no point in time are Daily folders being used for building databases. From time to time you can even delete all files older than those you need for TODAY's races from a daily folder. It's OK to do that because all of the files you need to build databases are sitting on a TARGET database build folder.
One note: You can also use the Data Folder Manager to toggle back and forth between TARGET databse build folders. But using it for that is a little redundant because you can do much the same thing inside of the Database Builder.
Hope I explained that in a way that makes sense.
