Off the Turf |
busseb 6/21/2009 7:44:22 PM | How are off-the-turf races labeled and how do I filter them out?

This happens on race day when races off the turf are picked up by either Scratch Bot or by the user in The Manual Changes Module. It happens automatically during a database build when the "O" surface designation is pulled from the results file and written to the playlist file.
You can write UDMs to flag "O" surfaces specifically by grabbing "O" (again without the quotes) from the Surface Drop Down in the UDM Wizard.
You can also deal with off the turf races in your UDM Defintions by keeping in mind how the following surface designations behave within the program:
D without the *wildcard character flags horses running in races today carded for and run on the main/outer dirt course only.
d without the *wildcard character flags horses running in races today carded for and run on the inner dirt course only.
D* wildcard character = ALL DIRT - D* (with the *wildcard character) is ANY dirt race. This designation flags horses running in races today carded for and run on EITHER the main/outer dirt or the inner dirt course. This surface designation ALSO flags horses in races run on either dirt course that were carded to be run on the turf but were taken off the turf.
T without the *wildcard character flags horses running in races today carded for and run on the main/outer Turf course only.
t without the *wildcard character flags horses running in races today carded for and run on the inner turf course only.
T* wildcard character = ALL TURF - T* (with the *wildcard character) is ANY turf race. This designation flags horses running in races today carded for and run on EITHER the main/outer Turf or the inner turf course. This surface designation ALSO flags horses in races run on a dirt course that were carded to be run on the turf but taken off the turf.
Hope I answered that in a way that makes sense.
Suggest creating a handful of inactive "test" UDMs (one for each surface designation) and viewing individual plays for them in the Data Window. You should be able to clearly see the effect of each when doing that.

busseb 6/23/2009 1:40:09 PM | Makes sense.
It just seems like there are a lot of more races that have been taken off the turf than show. Guess I'll keep track and make sure what seems to be actually is - or isn't.
