Quick Index Files - RE: New Program Version |
notchback 3/27/2009 9:55:44 PM | This is my first go-round with a new version. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but do I need to append all my Quick Index files for the new factors to be usable in them?
Along those same lines, do I need to append QI files when I make UPR or UF changes and have to rebuild the DB?
Thanks,
Doug

jeff 3/28/2009 12:32:00 AM | Info Model for Quick Index Files This new program version contains new playlist file data fields which in turn requires rebuilding databases from scratch. Not every program update contains new data fields and/or requires rebuilding databases from scratch. The new fields make it possible for the Data Window to perform exacta analysis as well as data queries broken out by the new factors for fast-slow.
After the install you will need to rebuild databases from scratch. You'll want to replace all old quick index files with new ones that are created using the newly rebuilt databases (playlist files) as the source. Do not mix and match program versions when making quick index files. What I mean by that is don't try to use the new program version to append to existing quick index files. You'll end up with files having x number of fields in the early part of the file and x + y number of fields in the latter part. That won't work. It WILL cause the Data Window to return an error msg telling you that the file isn't useable.
As a best practice ALWAYS re-create quick index files from scratch after installing any program update that requires rebuilding databases from scatch. And always use newly rebuilt from scratch playlist files as the the source. Follow that info model and you'll be fine.
Info Model for UPR and UserFactor Changes The same rules apply. After making changes to UPR or Userfactors you'll want to rebuild databases from scratch - that is - IF you want to see the effect of your changes in the Data Window. Changes to UPR and UserFactors that you make in the IVTable Wizard are persisted to the ImpactValues table. As soon as you hit the Save or Propagate buttons you've changed your definitions for UPR and/or UserFactors.
But at that point you haven't yet changed the content of playlist and quick index files. To do that you need to rebuild databases from scratch and create new quick index files.
Hope I've managed to explain things in a way that makes sense. If not, feel free to call.

notchback 3/28/2009 12:34:10 AM | Alright... I was hoping that wasn't the answer...
I need a new computer I think.
1004 race files took 5 hours to rebuild from scratch.
During the rebuild, CPU was between 85 and 100% busy.
Are there any settings as far as swapfile, etc. that might speed things up a bit?
Thanks for the info though... Saved me some head-scratching...

notchback 3/28/2009 12:42:00 AM | Getting an error rebuilding Track Index Files... So far on both CTX and AQU
Error:62:Description: Input past end of file Detail: Horse: 4 Race: 51 Track: 4 Date: 1

notchback 3/28/2009 12:55:17 AM | Add DED to the list...
3 for 3
I use TSN files if that helps.
Maybe I need to delete the pl_track files before running them...

Well, I tried deleting the old QI file and still get the same error...

jeff 3/28/2009 1:17:31 AM | I made a mistake here. I published a program update on 3/26 THINKING full Quick Index File Extact Tool compatibility was there. Obviously it wasn't. I had addressed and tested quick index file capability in the Data Window beforehand but not in the separate tool istelf. There's really no excuse for that other than I've been using the Data Window to create quick index files and not the separate tool. Still, I f#cked up and accept full responsibility for doing so.
Is the error message coming as a result of using the Data Window to create new quick index files?
Or are you using the Quick Index File Extract Tool?
If it is the latter are you using the program version from last night (3/26?)
Or did you install the 3-27 program version?
If you are using the Quick Index File Extract Tool that came with the 3-26 program version, suggested course of action would be to simply download and install the 3-27 program update ASAP.
No. The 3-27 program update won't require a further rebuild from scratch if you've already done that using the 3/26 program version.
But it SHOULD provide you an updated Quick Index File Extract Tool that is compatible with the new playlist file data structure.
Call if you need help.

I'm using the Quick Index File Extract Tool
I'm not sure which version I downloaded. It was early this morning at about 4am Pacific. Probably the 3/26 version then, huh?
Well, I will install the newest one then and see if that takes care of it.
I will be making a backup of my MDB... I've just spent the week re-doing stuff and I probably have a few weeks to go...
No worries Jeff. I should have downloaded the 3/27 version.
I will update this thread once I try again after the re-install.
That fixed it...
Sorry for the trouble...
Back to your regularly scheduled Friday night :-)
Thanks Jeff...
PS - Love the new additions! Can't wait for a help doc or a little explanation on the "weigh like Jeff" function... Took a look at it, but can't quite figure it out and with a 5 hour DB rebuild if I mess something up, I think I will wait for the tutorial :-)
