New database/UDM file for a new track |
busseb 12/1/2008 7:46:00 PM | Since WOX is closing, I need to find another track for the winter months. I thought the best thing to do is to start my UDM file fresh for my new track.
If I rename my 2008 folder as 2008WOX and moved my jcapper.mdb and jcapper2.mdb files from JCapperBuild to a safe backup folder and then downloaded the last JCapper update, would my UDM .mdb files be empty?
Would I have to manually reenter my UserFactors because they go with the .mdb files?
Is there and easier way to make sure I have my WOX info saved for next spring when I go back to that track and have empty files for my winter excursion now?
Thanks for you ideas!!

A better idea would be to just deactivate the UDMs you don't want to use for now.

Just modified each Udm using the Restrict Track List setting it to Wox. That way these Udms would not appear on the HTML report for any other tracks.

These are the full paths to the mdb files used by the program:
c:\2004\JCapper.mdb
c:\JCapper\Exe\JCapper2.mdb
Recommend that you make regular back ups of the first file. The second one is fully replaceable via program download and Data Window Export.
If you decide to take on a new track until WOX starts up again, and all you have are WOX track specific UDMs - you might want to Clone them - and then modify the clones for track code to match the current track you are targeting. Of course you can also create new UDMs for the new track. Then continue to work with the clones and new UDMs in terms of other factors until you get things dialed in.
If you work with clones - or new UDMs for the new track - and leave the JCapper.mdb file in the 2004 folder intact - all of your existing WOX UDMs will still be intact when WOX starts up next spring.

In terms of UserFactors:
If you have UserFactors that are track specific to WOX you can use the IVTable Wizard to add WOX to the track code field for each entry. Then, after saving - Clone the entry - edit the track code for the new track(s) you are targeting - add WOX to the avoid track field - and hit the save button.
The new cloned IVTable entries will only be applied when a track code match for the current track is found and will avoid kicking in when WOX is the track code.
When WOX starts up next spring your current UserFactors targeted for WOX will still be there waiting to kick in when WOX is the track code.
Hope I explained that in a way that makes sense.
Word to the wise: Back up your c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file BEFORE undertaking this.

busseb 12/2/2008 5:45:16 PM | Did you change the location of JCapper.mdb and JCapper2.mdb? Mine are both in c:/JCapperBuild/
My data files (.drf, .xrd and .dat) are in c:/2008/

jeff 12/2/2008 6:39:31 PM | Here's how these two files are handled within the program:
The active locations for those two files have purposely remained the same since their introduction:
c:\2004\JCapper.mdb
and
c:\JCapper\Exe\JCapper2.mdb
Blank versions of both files are always included in the download package. This allows for the program to be installed on a new machine or hard drive. Each time the extractor is run (whenever you download the most current version of the program) blank versions of both files are extracted onto your c:\JCapperBuild folder.
The c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file contains all of your UDM Definitions and IVTable entries that define your UPR and UserFactors. File content here is unique to each user and can not be replaced by me. That's why I keep harping on the need to keep back up copies of this file. That's also why, when the Installer is run, it is programmed to check for an existing c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file. If one is found the Installer leaves the file untouched/intact and gives the user a message that an existing file was found and left intact. If no c:\2004\JCapper.mdb file is found (which would be the case for a first time install) then the blank file from the c:\JCapperBuild folder is copied to the c:\2004 folder.
The c:\JCapper\Exe\JCapper2.mdb file is still under development. There are still data fields to be added to it for new Data Export items that will be coming out in free program updates over the next few months. Everything in this file is reproduceable/replaceable via Data Window Export. Once development for this file is complete then it too will enjoy "protection from overwrite" by the Installer. Until that happens every new program install causes this file to be replaced with a new blank current version of the file.

busseb 12/3/2008 9:39:49 PM | Just so I get it for certain:
the important file to backup is:
c:\2004\JCapper.mdb
The other JCapper and JCapper2 files are out there, but don't contain my personal data.
