JCapper Rookie Database Build Question |
HDWONLY01 8/26/2013 5:59:03 PM | Am a newbie to JCapper (very exciting stuff) and have been following through the syllabus step by step without an issue until I get to the database build section. Here is what I am doing/experiencing:
1. In the data folder manager I point to the data folder I want to build from, save it, and exit. 2. Click Build Database button and select mode 3 (as suggested from a thread I read) and .jcp files (I am an HDW subscriber). 3. I see from the build database button that it is pointing to the right file from step 1. 4. hit build database 5. answer "yes" to the question about clear starter history, etc. 6. answer "yes" to the question delete existing jcapper .dat and Do.txt files as part of rebuild from scratch. 7. answer "ok" to pop up telling me files from #6 have been deleted. 8.answer "ok" to pop up that jcapper has been compacted and repaired. 9. get a pop up telling me 0 race cards processed. 10. check exception report and it says no race cards are missing. 11. go to targeted folder and confirm that .jcp files are there. 12. try one more time through steps above. 13. post this question.
Thanks in advance for your help, Joe M Seattle, WA

jeff 8/26/2013 7:36:53 PM | Suggestions...
1. Check the file type selected in the drop down on the face of the Database Builder. (It should read "HDW JCapper Data file (*.jcp)" (without the quotes) per the screenshot at the following link: http://www.JCapper.com/MessageBoard/Avatars/DBBuilderFileTypeSetting.jpg
2. Check the Data Vendor Setting on the User System Definitions Screen. Hint: The Data Vendor setting has to match the file type setting in the drop down on the face of the Database Builder. If you are using HDW data, it should be persisted as "HDW" per the following screenshot towards the top of the User Sys Defs Help Doc: http://www.jcapper.com/helpdocs/UserSysDefsHelpDoc.htm
3. Are there .JCP and .XRD files (that match up by date and track code) sitting on the pointed to folder? If so, you should be able to see them per the following screenshot: http://www.JCapper.com/MessageBoard/Avatars/WindowsExplorerDetailsByName.jpg
Note that in the above screenshot (#3) I have launched Windows Explorer, and I am displaying DETAILS (because I right clicked not on a file but in the white space in the right hand pane [in the area highlighted in yellow mouse pen] and selected Details.)
Further, I have sorted the contents of the folder by NAME... accomplished by clicking the column header labeled name... and with those settings, I am looking at the contents of the pointed to folder or C:\2013\Q3_2013...
Note that the folder name is displayed in the address bar of the Windows Explorer interface. (Enabling me to verify that I am in fact looking at the same folder in Windows Explorer that I have the DB Builder pointed to.) (And not some other folder where I may inadvertently be storing files.)
Note that I have circled a pair of matching .JCP and .XRD files in red mouse pen.
From this screenshot I can SEE that I am in fact looking at the c:\2013\Q3_2013 folder and that I do in fact have at least 2 pairs of matching .JCP and .XRD files on the folder.
With these requirements met - The DB Builder WILL build a database on the pointed to folder when I hit the "Build Database" button.
Don't spend more than a few minutes on this. If you are still stuck after trying a few times - CALL ME - and we can do a remote session using a free service like join.me where I hop on your machine remotely and walk you through it.

HDWONLY01 8/27/2013 9:08:04 AM | Problem solved, thanks Jeff.
I have my data by year, by quarter and was pointing to the year folder thinking JCapper would automatically read the quarter sub folders. Once I pointed to one of the quarter folders, it built the database.
Thanks again.
