Horse goes outside gate coming down the stretch!!

jeff 4/14/2013 9:12:27 PM | I've been betting horses since 1981. In all that time I have never seen anything quite like the horse in that video. Yes, I've seen horses shy from things - suddenly veer in or veer out - and what happens when it's that severe is in about 90% of all cases the rider comes off.
All I can say about the X-Man (Xavier Perez) is that you sir have balls. How many riders out there would have bailed while the horse was still about 50 yards from that gate? Damn near ALL of them THAT's how many!

jeff 4/16/2013 6:46:47 PM | I read somewhere that the rider was interviewed afterward and said he thought the horse may have shied from sunlight reflecting in flashes off of standing water on the ground between the dirt course and the turf course. Note the path the horse took down the stretch: just inside the grandstand shadow. (If I recall correctly - according to the interview - the rider took that path on purpose after clearing the starting gate.)
Tough call as a bet back.
Chances are there's no standing water next time. But chances are the odds are low because everyone knows the horse was much the best last time.
