If you sign up for the HDW flex plan, do you get any back data files, or do you start your database from the date of your first download?

45 Days Rolling Data and Results
HDW maintains a rolling 45 days of data and results files on their current file downloads page. Meaning that if you go on vacation, - upon your return whatever files you missed will still be available for download if you want them. (This is different than what Brisnet does.)

Monthly Subscribers
If when you first sign up you tell them you intend to be a monthly subscriber, they will charge you for the current month (or pro-rate the current month if you start in the middle of the current month.)

As a monthly subscriber - any and all files from that rolling 45 days of data are yours to pick up FREE.

Daily Subscribers
If you sign up for the Flex Plan and tell them you want to (primarily) be a daily downloader - each day that you download is called a download date. You are charged the day rate for each download date. Each download date counts towards the monthly cap. Your total monthly download bill is capped at 15 download dates. Meaning that once you reach 15 for the files of a single calendar month - you can pick up the rest of that month's files with no additional charge. (Same as a monthly downloader that month.)

If you are a daily downloader - and you want to be charged only for individual download dates - then you should only use the Download By Date button on JCapper's HDW File Download Tool.

Here's the answer to your question:

As a daily subscriber - you start from the date of first download. Any and all files from that 45 days of rolling data are yours to pick up - but it is not (repeat not) free. (You will be billed the day rate for each download date that you pick up.)

If you are a daily downloader, any download dates that you pick up from the current calendar month count towards the current month cap. Hit 15 download dates for the current month and you invoke the cap - and you get the rest of the current month for free.

Any download dates from the 45 days of rolling data that you pick up from the prior month count toward the prior month cap. Hit 15 download dates for the prior month - and you get the rest of the prior month for free.

This gets into the area of back data. (I'll come back and post about that a little later.)

As a daily subscriber, you pay for each download date - no matter which month on the calendar it happens to fall in. (Each month is treated separately.)

Back Brisnet Data
After a few days, both data and results files disappear from the Brisnet download page and if you want them you have to hunt and peck them from the Archive Server. To the best of my knowledge, like all Equibase Data Resellers, Brisnet charges full price for back data too.

Back HDW Data
HDW sells back data in one month blocks. They offer a 10% discount for purchases of 6 or more months at one time - and a larger discount for purchases of 12 or more months at one time. To purchase back data, contact HDW directly. They will manually create a series of zip files (usually one zip file per month) and make downloads links available to you.

Daily Flex Plan Pricing
Silver Customers - $5.95 per download date (includes data and results for all North American thoroughbred tracks running that day.)

Platinum Customers - $7.95 per download date (includes data and results for all North American thoroughbred tracks running that day.)

Monthly Cap - Monthly download bill is always capped at 15 download dates. Hit 15 download dates for the files of any calendar month to make the cap for that month kick in - and if you want them, the rest of that month's files are free.

Monthly Pricing
Silver Customers - $89 per month (unlimited file downloads - data and results for all North American thoroughbred tracks that month.)

Platinum Customers - $119 per month (unlimited file download - data and results for all North American thoroughbred tracks that month.)

Monthly Cap - Monthly pricing is the same as the daily rate times 15 download dates.

Difference in pricing between Platinum and Silver plans is based on the strength of what the Platinum program is capable of doing with the files vs. what the Silver program can do.

Long winded?... You bet.

I hope I managed to explain most of that in a way that makes sense,
