When running through trainer info and making a UDM for a trainer, should we keep a set of validation races to test the UDM against? I've done it both ways, but I'm not sure what would be considered the overall best avenue.

So, is it ok to look at a years worth of a trainers data and make a UDM from it? Or is it better to look at a quarters worth and test it against another quarter?

I started combining train index files because some trainers dont' start enough horses to really gain anything useful from only a quarters worth of data. However, when you look at two quarters or a full years worth, you can find some information that can at the very least be interesting.

I wonder the same thing about rider UDMs but I figured one answer will answer the other.

Imho, there is no single best "one size fits all" time period for trainer patterns. Treat each trainer pattern as an individual entity. They work where they work and don't work where they don't work. Some outfits show patterns [great 1st up off the claim] that are good one year to the next. My favorite stuff is to find barns that show meet specific patterns -- For example spring Kee meet first year carries to spring Kee meet the next year - and still holds true Kee spring meet the year after that. But maybe the same barn shows totally different patterns during fall meets same track -- making spring meet patterns that much harder to uncover - if where you are looking is 6 mos, 12 mos, etc.
