Using PScore as UserFactor5 |
busseb 7/5/2011 11:06:11 PM | Wanted to play around with using gap and rank for the factor PScore by making it UserFactor5.
Not sure how I would get the correct inpact values for rank and gap.
Could someone get me going in the right direction?
Thanks!!

Depending on the size of your db and the predictive power of the factor you're looking at, you're going to want to employ either a little or a lot of smoothing to the performance you're seeing. You also have some leeway in terms of whether you want to base them on win% only, ROI only, or some hybrid of the two. The IV Tools will go ahead and plug in values for you, but this should only be considered a starting point or a shortcut for those just getting their feet wet. There's a lot of "art" to it, and like I said, I don't think there's necessarily a "correct" way.

I know I have to put in the Impact Vaues 3 time in the ImpactValues Wizard - "0" for rank and than again for value and again for gap.
What are the 2 codes for value and gap?
Since PScore isn't ranked in JCapper currently, if I put it in as UserFactor5, will it rank?
Thanks!

ryesteve 7/7/2011 10:06:16 AM | "1" is Value, and "2" is gap.
As for whether it'll rank, good question... ranks and gaps for the original PScore don't get saved to the playlist file, but they may exist internally. In the IV Wizard help docs, there is no restriction noted on PScore, while many other factors are marked as not usable with ranks and gaps.

However, HDW PScore (or PScore_HDW) isn't "grab-able" for use in UserFactors or UPR. That's because HDW Pscore is one of the last things calculated in the program's command chain during number crunching.
(The algorithm that generates HDW PScore uses statistical data about UPR for each horse in the field as inputs.) Think about it... UserFactor1 is "grab-able" and can be used as a building block en route to creating UserFactor2... which in turn can be used as a building block en route to UF3... which in turn can be used to create UF4... which in turn can be used to create UF5... which (finally) can be used to create UPR.
The program has a built in command sequence. The last thing created in the chain can't be used as an input to create the first thing in the chain.
That said, JCapper will rank and gap standard PScore if you "grab" it in the following manner:
1. Make a backup copy of the following file (just in case) before getting started: c:\2004\jcapper.mdb
2. Make a decision that one of your 5 Userfactor slots be allocated as PScore. (For example: UserFactor1)
3. Use the IV Table Wizard's interface to delete all pre-existing table entries bearing the same groupname as the UserFactor you will be using... in this case UserFactor1.
4. Create a single new table entry for the groupname you will be using (in this case UserFactor1) as follows:
GroupName: USERFACTOR1
Factor: PSCORE
Behavior: 3 Translate
Surface: *
5. Save your work.
That's it!!!
From that point forward, when you run a Calc Races or Build Database routine, the numbers generated as UserFactor1 will be exactly the same as PScore. The interface will rank it and gap it too.
You'll probably want to rebuild databases from scratch. After doing that, you'll be able to see impact values and roi by rank and gap whenever you break your results out by Userfactor1 rank or gap in the Data Window...
In turn that will enable you to "grab" UserFactor1 in the event you decide to use it as a building block when creating UserFactors 2 through 5, and/or UPR.
