Today (Sun 04-28-2019) is opening day for The Century Mile.

Track code or first three characters of data file name: "CTM" (without the quotes.)

Track_name in the scratches and changes XML: "CENTURY MILE" (without the quotes.)

Screenshot of my TrackAbbrev table entry to enable parsing of the scratches and changes XML in Scratch BOT:

CENTURY MILE

The Century Mile is a brand new one mile dirt oval located adjacent to the Edmonton airport. I've been told they are getting the thoroughbred dates that have been historically given to (now closed) Northlands Park.

I tried to pull up a satellite image using Google Maps to get a sense of track layout.

I was unable to do that because the satellite imagery on Google Maps for the Edmonton area is a good two years old. It shows an empty field instead of the newly constructed track.

I ended up going through a company called LandSat. Here's a screenshot of one of their satellite images that was taken on Apr 15, 2019:

CENTURY MILE SAT

Notes --

Not as clear as the imagery normally available from Google Maps. But does get the job done insofar as providing a sense of track layout.

GPS coordinates at the tail end of the black marker in the above satellite image are: 53.315312, -113.557995

The blue line was added by me and is an estimate of where I think the finish line will be. (Will post an updated image as needed after I see an actual race or two.)

Here's a link to construction site drone footage taken during a fly-over on May 24, 2018:
https://thehorses.com/news/thoroughbred/item/2402-century-mile-fly-over-video

If I freeze the video at about the 3:40 mark - and if I then note where the clubhouse under construction is - and compare the shapes of the two lakes in the infield to those shown in the satellite image above: I'm about 99% certain the satellite image above shows the correct location. I'm also about 90% certain the blue line shown in the satellite image above (as well as the gps coordinates that I posted) are within a few yards of where the actual finish line will turn out to be.

Michael Wrona calling their races today. (Good to see him working again.)

Pools on the small side. Win pool R1 about $5800. (Hope things improve.)

Actual finish line roughly 10-15 yards further down the stretch than the blue line I added to the satellite image posted above.

Was wondering about their takeout rates, and found the following on their website:
https://thehorses.com/news/thoroughbred/item/2738-century-mile-track-specifications-sure-to-surprise-and-please

--quote:
"Racing fans will see several welcome changes at Century Mile which is moving to a 1:45 p.m. post time on Saturdays and Sundays to better accommodate simulcast wagering (when Thursdays are added to the schedule beginning on May 30 post time will be 5:55 p.m.)

One of the biggest is the takeout. Win, place and show wagering will now have a 14.75 per cent takeout which makes it the lowest in North America. (It was 17 per cent at Northlands). Even better the take out on the Pick 5 and Hi 5 pools will be just 10 per cent and 15 per cent on Pick 3 and Pick 4 bets as opposed to 26.8 per cent at Northlands."
--end quote

Fyi, I had a fair amount of success at Northlands Park over the years. (It was one of my favorite tracks to play.)

Even though I am truly saddened to see NPX close:

I like CTM's takeout rates and have decided to (at first) create some MLR models. At a minimum, I need a few weeks of prob expression stats for riders, trainers, and post positions.

After that, I plan on putting some handle dollars into their pools.

Century Mile new track operated by same casino operation as Century Downs in Calgary.
The horseman are happier with treatment by new ownership from previous Northlands Park in Edmonton and Stampede Park in Calgary.
I was in attendance for their opening day last Sunday. New building nice but viewing races from clubhouse restricted. Where I was in clubhouse viewing blocked for both turns. Nice to have only one mile track in western Canada. One turn races for sprints will be easier on the horse population than 2 turn races on 5 furlong tracks. Good to know about better takeout rates.
Just my two cents
